Now I can work out my arms a bit more when I dance. I don't know how heavy the official ones are, but I made mine 2 Lb. each.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oh I just looked them up. They call them 'toning sticks' and the 1 lb 'toning sticks' are $19.94 and the 2.5 'toning sticks' are $24.95. I spent $6.00 on mine, and the filler was scrap I had on hand. Before I even got going a mini van parked right behind me and the two passengers just hung out there for the next 30 minutes. And a moving van parked in front of the other garages and had five people tromping in and out loading the van from the upstairs apartment. I just can't catch a break, can I?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The cold weather makes my joints ache, so it was a rather painful and self conscious workout. I just tried to keep visualizing what I'd look like without all this extra flab. I'm trying to clear exercise space in my bedroom, which involved moving a Japanese lantern and a mobile, and I have overhead space now, but not floor space. #FAIL  It's such a simple concept; why can't I get it right?Tomorrow is going to be problematic too, because it's supposed to rain. So I decided to do my own workout only in their time parameter. &lt;P&gt;I decide the alley in front of my open garage is my best option. Our neighbors let their dog poop on the grass so unless I want to clean that up every day the common lawn is out. Plus it's often marshy because the timer is set on too much water. Ah the joys of renting.I laid out a mat so I could take my shoes off on the asphalt. I want to get a rug instead because the mat is slippery.  I also got a radio hooked up and an easy to read clock. I put up a calendar so I can keep track of my workouts.  Now the hardest thing is to grow a thick skin so that when my neighbors park right there and stare at me, I don't get rattled. They aren't supposed to park in the alley but they do. Then they just sit there while one of them runs upstairs for 20 minutes. I found out I don't work out as hard when I'm being watched. Even if they aren't watching, I can't forget they are there.My workout consists of any moves I can do without aggravating current injuries. The weather in S. California has been gorgeous as the new year gets off to a warm start.&lt;br /&gt;The day after I rode, my shoulders were pretty sore. I'm not used to leaning over handlebars. And I had some trouble with the shifting process, but over all I'm getting over my fear of bicycling.&amp;nbsp; And it's so much more time efficient that walking. It's nice to go fast for a change and not spend 30 minutes just getting around the block. I feel like I'm not making any progress in this area of my life.&amp;nbsp; Spark People is helping somewhat, but I need to move my butt more and get busy sweating off some of these pounds. Which is hard when I hurt all over. Maybe I should go for a walk right now before it gets hot out. We got a little carried away and took too many photos. It was nuts. My friend Mandy joined in too. The weather was perfect.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then after I got back home to Anaheim the heat wave hit with several days being over 100 degrees. So no hooping for me. Luckily it's starting to cool down a bit. She lost 53 pounds, then quit the site, gained it all back, and just went back to the site to start over.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So I joined it too. Once I get over the eyestrain from even looking around on that site, I think it may be a lot of fun and maybe even help me focus on getting my weight down to a low enough level that my Dr. doesn't gasp every time I step on his scale. Even walking hurt. We went shopping and I had to walk really slow. Tonight I did some stretching. My knee is hurting but not in the same spot. Now it's hurting on the outside edge. So I wanted to create a new Gmail account to verify Twitter. Only Gmail won't let you make a new account anymore unless you have a cellphone that receives text messages. Which I think is bogus. I rarely use a cell phone and I wouldn't give them my number even if I did. Screw that. Stupid Gmail.&amp;nbsp; So I used my old Yahoo email instead, but it had gone inactive so I had to jump through hoops getting that running again. So now hopefully this blog, Twitter, Daily Booth and so on are all linked together. My body is going to have to adjust to the new stretching routine. Or I just slept badly on my pillows. But I did some stretches and now my head feels like it's on more or less straight again. I am mortified at the way I look. So this morning I had my boyfriend take full body photos. Usually I 'cheat' and use tricky angles in an effort to look thinner. But that only works online, and when people meet me in real life they see me as I am. I cringe to look at these, but it wouldn't be much of a goal if we didn't have before and after photos right? I'm not sure if I'm brave, stupid or just trying to humiliate myself. &lt;br /&gt;BTW I do have men on my Flickr group that think I'm hot just the way I am. So I was quite happy today when I compared measurements from May 2007 with today. I've actually lost an inch on my waist and my hips are the same. So I'm not ballooning up like I thought. It's small encouragement but it just proves how our mind can trick us.&lt;br /&gt;On Thursday I walked to Knott's Berry Farm and back, which took me an hour. I did have to sit and rest once I got there, so the walk took about 40 minutes. I'm thinking of getting the yearly pass so I can actually walk inside the amusement park. Part of the reason I don't walk more is this neighborhood is boring and about the most unsafe neighborhood I've lived in. But inside the park they have fun things to look at and security. And I can see the live shows too. &lt;br /&gt;I was thinking of walking there again on Friday but it was closed and it rained all day. &lt;br /&gt;Today I spent an hour doing housework without any breaks to get my heart rate up. I did laundry, vaccuumed, took out trash, and so forth. And I walked up and down the alley and did some belly dance moves. One thing I've noticed is my knees are not flexible anymore and any serious bending hurts. I'm not sure if I can fix that by working out more or if my knees are just shot from being overweight and from years of dancing. We'll see. Then I had a relative that was dying in the hospital and my best laid plans flew out the window. It was too inconvenient to stick to the plan, and just days after she died I had to go out of town for a week on business. Yesterday I just had water. Today I had milk and tonight I had tea. And even though I was dreading drinking tea without sugar, it actually tasted really good compared to the blandness of water and milk. I find my meals a lot less enjoyable without soda. Hopefully I'll get used to it before I get too discouraged.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The only downside is the horrific headache I've had all day, which may be caffeine withdrawal, or from the argument my boyfriend and I had yesterday that ruined the whole weekend. He's actually mocking my efforts to give up soda and my struggles with the combo meals at fast food places, where it actually costs more to get the meal without soda. I don't even like the sports drinks but my bf buys them and since I'm the one in the apt. all the time I'm the one drinking them.&lt;br /&gt;So last night I decided to do some behavior modification and for one year only drink water, milk and unsweetened tea, in that order. I'm hoping that making that change will lead to me losing 50 lbs. in a year. I need to plan ahead and take special drinks because everyone else is going to be guzzling alchohol or cola and if I don't plan ahead I'll have limited options to have a healthy drink. I find my resolve disappears halfway through Sat. on those weekend events on a hot spring day. Then I will grab any soda someone offers me. It's not their fault. My top half should be fixable. Sometimes I think below the waist is too far gone to ever reclaim. I am now officially shaped like a pyramid. Hopefully the juggling will help, especially at the rate I am dropping things on the ground and bending over to pick them up. Also, if I can ever get the hoop to stay around my waist, that should help. Partly, because of aging my skin is losing it's elasticity and that isn't helping any either. But mostly it's the need to change my lifestyle from an inactive one to an active one, which means less TV and way less computer sitting. When I asked him to help me put it away he made some excuses about 'well this goes outside' and 'I don't know where to put that'. Well where was it before we took it with us today? So I shoved it aside into the dead center of the hallway and I did my dance practice anyway. He can trip over it when he goes to work tomorrow. Is that passive aggression on his part or what? He complimented me two nights ago for cleaning the space, and now this? Plus my practice wasn't much fun because I was mad by then.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's the same thing that happened to the counter space I cleared. He set his Christmas cooking stuff there and it's still there. And he wonders why we never have a clean house.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I did a lot of schlepping of stuff at the archery workshop today, so I got some exercise that way. But my knees were not happy tonight. I used it last night and today and it made a world of difference. Each day I'll clear a bit more out of there until I have a bigger dance space again. I took some photos to celebrate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today I went outside and got the local rugrats involved in some jumproping. I was just the spinner. I don't think my knees can handle jumping on sidewalks. But it was good to be part of getting kids to exercise. And this Sunday is archery so I know I'll get plenty of exercise on that day. &lt;br /&gt;My back feels stiff and my hip joints hurt when I was walking. That just shows how quickly I go downhill when I have to lay off of walking for a few days.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also I heard that we need sunshine on our retinas each day. It produces seratonin, a mood stabilizer. So I need to make sure I get out in the sun 30 min. a day from now on. The color is disturbing, and I still have to eat regular food with it. It takes 21 days to form a new habit, so hopefully it will grow on me. My bf took one drink and said it was too 'chewy' for him. But that is rather the point...unlike a juicer that removes fiber, the blender method leaves in all the fiber, and we all need more fiber. And yes, it is very filling. That sure put the kibosh into working out. I've been married to the heating pad all day. Oh well, at least I'm taking the time to learn about making vegetable and fruit smoothies ala montel. Putting the fruit in with the vegetables in the blender masks the flavors of the greens. I firmly believe that you don't need to belong to a gym to get fit. Save that money for a trip to Europe or something. I have heard more people than I can count say they joined a gym, went two or three times, didn't like being the only fat person there, didn't like being stared at, didn't like the fact that everytime they arrived the place was crowded with lines to get on their favorite equipment, didn't like the men trying to pick them up and so on. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now if you have a passion, like belly dancing, or fixed gear bicycles, by all means invest your money there. But once you have a vocabulary of dance steps, or a functional bike, you don't have to keep spending on more and more accessories.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And the beauty of it is people are always getting out of those things, so you can buy used equipment, videos, costume bits and all kinds of things used either on craigs list, freecycle, local yard sales, dance studio swap meets and so on. I got a great set of used silver toned finger cymbals for less than half the new price because the dancer decided she liked the bronze color better. Keep your measurements and your tape measure handy so you can snap up those great deals.&lt;br /&gt;And remember if you have skills like sewing, you can trade services for goods sometimes. It doesn't hurt to ask.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I used some of my Christmas money to buy a new frisbee with a California surfer girl on it. My boyfriend promised to toss a frisbee with me from time to time. So yay, another cheap way to work out! It was a blast. I even managed a behind the back catch, an under-the-leg, and a few trailing edge catches. Woo. That's a good workout that is also a fun time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My hooping is coming along too. I've been doing it daily, unless I'm too sore and then I skip a day. I was at a giant park near the Rose Bowl and I took a long walk through the winding trails, climbed all over the place taking photos, did a fair amount of stretching, some juggling and some belly dancing. My ankles were sore at night.&lt;br /&gt;Then on Monday I walked 30 minutes and now my ankles are really sore. I know I'm supposed to do it every day, but it is grueling on sore feet. I want to do the 10,000 steps program that I've seen on some websites. If I walked it just to get to 10,000 steps it would take me 2 hours of nothing but walking each day. So the idea is to wear the pedometer wherever you go and count both your fitness walking, and all the other steps you take shopping, running errands, visiting friends, going to church and everywhere else busy people go. I went to the dentist for a toothache and found out I have 2 abcessed teeth.  And she wouldn't fix them because my blood pressure was high.  So she sent me off to a Dr.  The Dr. put me on 2 kinds of meds for hbp.  But while I was getting the exam, I asked them to check out the wart on my forehead that I've had about a year.  And she said she thinks it's a non-matastasizing skin cancer.  And she wants it removed ASAP.  &lt;br /&gt;So suddenly my self care has taken on a whole new surrealistic side.  I was in shock for three days.&lt;br /&gt;But today I have a belly dancing student coming over, and we are going to dance.  I refuse to give up. So I had to come up with a way to get more exercise back into my life.&lt;br /&gt;So each day I plan to walk 30 minutes in the morning.  So this morning I did.  Then tonight I did 100 legs lifts on each side while standing.  And I also did some stretching to limber up.  Hopefully, now that the holidays are over, I can be more consistant.&lt;br /&gt;I'm also cutting way back on soft drinks and replacing them with water. They won't stay off of injuries long enough to let them heal properly.So for once I'm going to let my head rule my heart. I'm staying off my bad knee today because I know a 2 hour class tonight would kill my efforts to let it heal this week. My two students are too new to go through class with verbal directions. I feel bad that I had to cancel though. So this morning I did some research into it. And Bingo...I found an article that says this water thing is an urban myth. And that much of the daily quota is met in the foods we consume that have water in them already. Since I'm alone a lot of the time, it's hard to stay motivated. But I think having a blog will keep me more aware of it, so I can stay on top of things.
